Dr Lesley Carew is a registered Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist practising at the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town with a satellite sessional room on Thursday afternoons at the Akeso Milnerton.
This is a child-oriented practice committed to the assessment and long-term care of children and their families who present with psychiatric difficulties affecting their social, emotional, and scholastic development. Dr Carew works within the context of a multi-disciplinary team involving, with the parents’ permission, the teacher, psychologist, and other professionals involved in a child’s daily care and development.
Psychiatric Assessments Dr Carew restricts the first assessment to children aged 13 years and below. An exception is made for young adolescents with Autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disability. The first assessment is conducted in the morning in the Cape Town office. The initial assessment is conducted over 2 hours and both parents are encouraged to attend with their child. It begins with a comprehensive history exploring family roles and functioning, the child’s developmental history, and current functioning and symptoms of distress. This leads to a preliminary diagnosis with the possible recommendation of further investigations, a review of other sources of information from e.g. the teacher and therapists, and strategies for intervention. Follow up appointments are scheduled to review the response to interventions, and expand upon the treatment plan. They may be scheduled in the morning or afternoon and there is availability for follow up at Akeso Milnerton on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Children who are prescribed medication must be reviewed at least every 6 months. This is a requirement of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
Tariffs may be discussed with Mrs Anshaaf Abrahams, the practice manager.
