We are thrilled to return to hosting Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award events in-person again this year. South Africa recently hosted two ceremonies, one in Johannesburg on Thursday 11 May and the other in Cape Town on Thursday 18 May. The event in Johannesburg was held at The Venue Melrose Arch, an urban and trendy precinct, while the Cape Town event took place at the Two Oceans Aquarium which is home to over 3000 creatures from the microscopical to sharks.
The awards recognise the exceptional achievements of students in South Africa in the June and November 2022 Cambridge examination series for Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Levels.
157 Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards were presented to students from 46 schools across the country. Nine students received prestigious ‘Top in the World’ awards for gaining the highest standard mark in the world in a single subject, while 60 students won 'Top in South Africa' which are presented to learners who gained the highest standard mark in the country for a single subject.
Speaking at the ceremony Juan Visser, Regional Director, Cambridge International, Sub-Saharan Africa congratulated the winners on their achievements despite the challenges of learning through a global pandemic: 'These experiences have taught you the resilience to keep moving forward. With the education you have from Cambridge and from your schools, and the resilience you have built, nothing can get in the way of you achieving your dreams.'
Monica Dunk, Head of Administration and Cambridge International at Reddam House Durbanville, a school in Cape Town whose students collected 18 awards, commented: 'A huge thank you from all of us at Reddam House Durbanville for a memorable, wonderful and inspirational Cambridge awards evening on Thursday 18 May. We were not expecting a three-course meal, the wonderful speeches and words directed at our students who won awards and the final "clincher" - the [aquarium] divers holding the awards banner. Our award winners and their parents were very grateful and very complimentary of the event. Even more meaningful is that our students thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony and were made to feel very special.'
All top performing students received certificates from Cambridge International in recognition of their achievements.
