Dr Lesley Carew
Psychiatric Assessments
Dr Carew restricts the first assessment to children aged 13 years and below. An exception is made for young adolescents with Autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disability. The first assessment is conducted in the morning in the Cape Town office.
The initial assessment is conducted over 2 hours and both parents are encouraged to attend with their child. It begins with a comprehensive history exploring family roles and functioning, the child’s developmental history, and current functioning and symptoms of distress. This leads to a preliminary diagnosis with the possible recommendation of further investigations, a review of other sources of information from e.g. the teacher and therapists, and strategies for intervention.
Follow up appointments are scheduled to review the response to interventions, and expand upon the treatment plan. They may be scheduled in the morning or afternoon and there is availability for follow up at Akeso Milnerton on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Children who are prescribed medication must be reviewed at least every 6 months. This is a requirement of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
