Psychiatric Assessments Dr Carew restricts the first assessment to children aged 13 years and below. An exception is made for young adolescents with Autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disability. The first assessment is conducted in the morning in the Cape Town office. The initial assessment is conducted over 2 hours and both parents are encouraged to attend with their child. It begins with a comprehensive history exploring family roles and functioning, the child’s developmental history, and current functioning and symptoms of distress. This leads to a preliminary diagnosis with the possible recommendation of further investigations, a review of other sources of information from e.g. the teacher and therapists, and strategies for intervention. Follow up appointments are scheduled to review the response to interventions, and expand upon the treatment plan. They may be scheduled in the morning or afternoon and there is availability for follow up at Akeso Milnerton on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Children who are prescribed medication must be reviewed at least every 6 months. This is a requirement of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Dr Theonie Du Plessis

Theonie has a particular interest in anxiety disorders, mood disorders and neuro-developmental disorders - especially during the developmental phases of middle childhood, adolescence and early adulthood. She continues to see children, adolescents and adults and sees herself as a general psychiatrist with a special interest in the early presentation of psychiatric symptoms.

Dr Fiona Ulla Schulte

Initial assessments are usually 90 minutes long and will include exploring the presenting concerns as well as a thorough background medical, developmental and family history. Younger children and adolescents are usually seen both individually and together with their parents during a session. Additional information may be obtained through standardised rating scales. Follow up appointments are between 30 and 60 minutes.
