On Friday, 31 May 2024, we hosted a Grade 9 History E-Day, immersing students in the major battles of World War II in Europe. This event featured enthralling guest speakers who shared their knowledge, stories and props, providing students with a vivid picture of historical events.
We were honoured to have John Keats, a 97-year-old WWII veteran, join us for the day. Mr Keats, who illegally enlisted at 15 years old, fought in significant battles in Italy, including Monte Cassino. He captivated our students for over an hour, recounting his wartime experiences, his capture as a prisoner of war and the treatment he received. His stories offered invaluable first-hand insights into the realities of war.
The day’s activities then took a lively turn as students were split into regiments and taken to the fields to experience a re-enactment of the D-Day battle of Normandy. Under supervision, students learned to handle Airsoft rifles, underwent physical training drills and participated in a simulated beach storming. The re-enactment saw students playing the roles of the American forces, while their teachers portrayed the Germans. Despite numerous “casualties” on both sides, the students ultimately captured the “beaches of Normandy”, overthrowing their teachers in a spirited final assault.
This authentic, hands-on experience allowed our students to engage deeply with historical content, blending education with immersive, interactive fun. The event was a resounding success, leaving students with lasting memories and a profound understanding of WWII history.
