CAPE TOWN, September 11, 2024 - In partnership with Surplus Radical Books, Cornerstone Institute is proud to announce the South African launch of Grant Farred's latest book, The Perversity of Gratitude: An Apartheid Education (2024), published by Temple University Press.

This book is a philosophical and profoundly self-reflective account that explores the significant impact of four individuals on Farred's intellectual and scholarly journey.

These individuals include Richard (RO) Dudley, Farred's deputy principal and teacher at Livingstone High School; Morgan MacArthur, his English teacher at Livingstone High School; Stanley Ridge, his lecturer and Head of Department in English Literature at the University of the Western Cape; and Richard Rive, a writer who, although not formally Farred's teacher, inspired him to write.

The event will feature Professor Grant Farred, a prominent scholar and Professor at the African Studies and Research Center, Cornell University (Ithaca, New York). Professor Farred is an alumnus of Livingstone High School and the University of the Western Cape. He will be in conversation with Professor Crain Soudien, President of Cornerstone Institute, former Chief Executive Officer of the Human Sciences Research Council, and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town.

The book launch will take place on September 23, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Bertha House, 69 Main Road, Mowbray.

This launch offers an opportunity to engage with Professor Grant Farred's life and work. It will explore education, influence, and intellectual growth themes during South Africa's apartheid era. The conversation promises to be insightful for those interested in South African history, education, and philosophy.
