World Maths Day

By 3P Learning

Get Ready for World Maths Day – The Ultimate Global Challenge!

Mark your calendars! The world-leading Mathetics program, currently used in all nine provinces of South Africa as an educational tool, is bringing us together for another ‘World Maths Day’ event.

18 March 2025, Johannesburg, South Africa - On 26 March, millions of students worldwide will put their maths skills to the test on ‘World Maths Day’, the largest annual online live maths competition hosted by 3P Learning. This exciting event has brought together over 10 million students from 150+ countries for nearly two decades, turning maths into a high-energy, global challenge filled with fun, learning, and incredible prizes.

This year’s theme, ‘Maths for Everyone’, is breaking the stereotype that maths is only for the academically gifted. Whether you're a maths whiz or just starting, World Maths Day proves that maths is engaging, empowering, and accessible to all—because numbers are for everyone!

Why join?

World Maths Day has become a global phenomenon, making friendly competition out of arguably one of the hardest subjects available. It’s no secret that improving your STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) skills will help you in all aspects of learning but this live event also allows students to compete with peers from around the world to test their skills in real-time.

The gamified nature of the event keeps students involved in an example of positive screen time, using technology in an ad-free, fun and engaging way.

Participating in World Maths Day is free for students aged 5 to 18 and participants can enter as individuals or on behalf of their school. With fantastic prizes up for grabs, the top students in each global grade will be awarded an iPad, with the top schools nabbing over R4,500 in e-commerce vouchers.

Spotlight on Akshara Chimakurthy

A local South African student in Grade 6 at Summerhill School SA in Midrand, Akshara Chimakurthy is the first student worldwide to have earned ‘Infinity Status’ by dedicating her time to earn one certificate every week for a year - even during the school holidays.

Chimakurthy credits Mathletics for helping her improve her speed in addition and subtraction, and also improving her understanding of data handling. Saying that she will be partaking in the live event on the 26th, Chimakurthy says Mathletics has made studying more efficient and she uses the tool to test herself on specific topics.

Chimakurthy’s Maths teacher, Mr David Bolton, further reinforces the Mathletics program's positive effect on his students, saying it aligns with the curriculum, helping them challenge themselves with the content they are currently learning. Further to this, he says, “I can adapt the content to suit each learner’s needs, ensuring they are appropriately challenged. The platform provides real-time feedback, allowing students to learn from their mistakes instantly.”

Mathletics offers teachers a wide variety of resources, which cover a range of topics aligned with the curriculum. Bolton says the students love the gamification elements of Mathletics, particularly Live Mathletics, where they can compete with others in real-time.

Join the movement and become a local maths legend!

The countdown to World Maths Day has begun. With the live competition kicking off on 26 March, local schools have the perfect opportunity to put their maths skills to the test, compete on a global stage, and bring home prizes and recognition for their students and school.

The warm-up period is live from 12 March, giving students the chance to sharpen their skills before the big day. And the best part? Registration and participation are completely free and done online, making it easy for every school and student to take part.

Don’t miss out on this incredible chance to celebrate maths, boost confidence, and show the world what South Africa’s Mathletes can do!

Schools across South Africa are invited to take part in the annual World Maths Day on 26 March.
