Education is essential, but learning about Jesus through the avenue of education is a tremendous blessing and privilege. Our vision is that every pupil would be firmly grounded in God’s Word, be well-educated, and add significant value to society. The love of God is experienced daily at Treverton through Chapel services on Sunday evenings, pupil-led SCA meetings on Tuesday evenings, biblical devotions shared at midweek assemblies, Bible Education classes, and interactions with staff and peers. We strive to live out a genuine faith in daily life.
Treverton’s academic philosophy is to enable our learners to unlock and reach their academic potential. Our teaching ethos is mutual respect between the teacher and the learner. We desire that our learners acquire knowledge, values, and life skills through classroom interactions. Treverton College has a solid, proven academic record. Our pupils write the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate examination. The IEB is a UMALUSI accredited institution with impeccable credentials in the university and business environment, locally and abroad. We can extend the high academic performers to achieve the very best results they can, with many of our top learners achieving in the top 1% of the IEB national results. At the same time, the learners who struggle are enabled to reach their full academic potential. We actively encourage a learning culture within the school that will ensure a core of academically ambitious and driven learners that set the tone for the school. Support is available for those learners who struggle academically. Our academic team works as an integrated unit to identify, assess and implement strategies for struggling learners. Our Mentor programme creates a central point of communication between the academic staff and the family. The student’s assigned Mentor is dedicated to communicating with parents regularly on the progress of these learner support programmes. We believe in using technology and multi-media as teaching tools, and the process of equipping our teachers in this field is ongoing. Various systems and applications supplement and improve teaching and learning techniques. Nothing will replace an excellent teacher, and our focus is on technology as a tool rather than the ultimate goal of education.
Boarding is a home away from home. Students live in comfortable boarding houses and are mentored through relationship with Boarding Staff members. We aim to make our boarding feel like home for those in our care and have a very happy boarding contingent. Each House is overseen by a House Parent, Assistant House Parent, and duty staff members. Newcomers find themselves quickly embraced in the welcoming environment through loving, approachable, prayerful and experienced “mothering” and “fathering” that House Parents provide. We offer both termly and weekly boarding, allowing the flexibility to choose according to individual circumstances. Camaraderie and family spirit are fostered in each house. The individual’s unique strengths and dignity are fiercely protected, and life skills like self-management and independence are fostered through the rules, “parenting”, and mentoring systems.
Music, Dramatic and Visual Arts are offered as academic subjects. The College produces a school play and a Revue every year and frequently has pupil artwork on exhibition in other locations. Arts and culture thrive at the College, inspired by our surroundings and the diversity of our student body. Lessons in several instruments including piano, guitar, drums, flute, voice and violin, are available. Alongside the regular events in the cultural side of life are courses in Toastmasters, as well as the opportunity to be involved in the Technical Crew, which runs all the sound and lighting for events. Afternoon lessons in dance are available at the College, including ballet, modern, tap and hip hop.
Sport is played with passion at all levels. Pupils are expected to play one sport per term, which generally involves attending two practices and playing one match per week. Our philosophy of sport is that we play a sport well, addressing the holistic development of a student through sport. To complement the inter-school league fixtures, a thriving inter-house competition aims to build school spirit. We believe that the relationship and understanding between pupils and staff grow best outside the classroom. Our staff are actively involved in the sports field and outdoor activities. We offer a wide range of traditional sports and several ‘lifestyle’ sports such as trail running and mountain biking.
Financial Aid is only offered to current enrolled students. Partial scholarships for Grade 8 starting students, are allocated in the April the year prior to their start.
