The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Sport Administration Unit has started the new year, 2023 with full force and dedication.

DUT’s Football Club had its first official season matches in 2023 on Saturday, 27 January 2023 and Sunday, 28 January 2023. The club won both matches, having a great start to the new year.

As the Sport Administration Unit, they will be introducing new coaches from different sporting codes, the first being the new rugby coach, Luvuyiso Lusaseni who spoke on his role and the objectives of the team.

Lusaseni said, “As a coach, I’m very passionate about finding new and simplistic ways to develop players on and off the field while bridging the gap from amateur to professional players with the end goal of being able to play at the highest levels.”

He further explained that his goal is to pass on his extensive rugby knowledge that he has acquired over the number of years as a professional player and coach while mentoring upcoming players that might have ambition of playing rugby at a higher level.

As Lusaseni will be working with DUT Rugby, he has shared some of his objectives which are:

  • To create a level playing field where every young person (Boy or Girl) can create a better future for themselves by using rugby as a vehicle for better opportunities.
  • To increase mass participation in the university by players of all levels.
  • To encourage more boys and girls from areas where rugby has not been played to participate and experience everything the game has to offer.
  • To nurture and promote more quality players coming through the university rugby programme to have a bigger impact at the top levels of the game.

He also mentioned that as part of the DUT ENVISION2030 objectives of creating innovative and adaptive graduates, he wants to identify talented athletes and help them use the rugby programme to give them a chance of making a career in the sport and create a sustainable rugby community that will help develop the game within the university.

To get the ball rolling, the DUT Sport Clubs have started training and below are their training schedules:
